VERMONT WAGYU PRODUCTION SALE
September 6-7, 2024
Welcome to Vermont Wagyu, joined this year by Elite Wagyu Genetics and by Nordik Wagyu from
Quebec Canada. We hope to see you here in September at the farm and for those of you online, we look forward to greeting you on Saturday afternoon on September 7th. The task of choosing the best of the best seedstock to enter this auction is challenging. After 17 years of breeding, and our accumulated data, we decided to set a bar for entry into this sale. All animals hadto rank in the top ten percent for at least one of the following traits, marbling (IMF %) and/or Carcass weight. Furthermore, those traits could be among the top 10% by EPD or by EBV, as represented by the two associations, the Australian Wagyu Association (EBVs) and the American Wagyu Association (EPDs). After that, it was a matter of sharing each animal’s story, no animal is the same. When you look through the catalog, you will see that we have deluged you with data. Wagyu is our passion, and data helps to tell the story. You will note the carcass images supplied spanning 14 years, along with our 5 years of live Ultrasound data, ever searching for those heifers that are outstanding within their group for their expression of marbling and ribeye area. These heifers go to the top of my list. We have posted both EPDs and EBVs. Remember, conclusions from genomic evaluations are a prediction, certainly better than a palm reading, but an estimated scientific prediction none the less. We have had the privilege to be part of progeny testing and will share that with our customers. Of late, we have leaned heavily on inbreeding coefficients and will highlight those animals which represent out crosses. Growth, disposition, and phenotypic structure were the mainstays for VT Wagyu selection for years. Now we can do better with the wealth of ultrasound and carcass data in our pockets. At the end of the day, Roger Osinchuk, our farm supervisor for those that do not know him already, is keen on reminding me that there is nothing like laying eyes on the animal itself. A special nod to the Vermont Wagyu team who have been the backbone of this farm, and who have made this auction happen. I have been distracted with other responsibilities this year and have relied heavily on them. This team works endlessly for our customers, both our meat and our livestock folks, without hesitation. This is the understated way of Vermont Wagyu. You will always have our support.
